A720 crash: Edinburgh police lock down city bypass after Sheriffhall Roundabout smash

A busy section of the Edinburgh city bypass has now reopened after it was closed by police due to a serious road traffic collision earlier this afternoon.

Both lanes of the A720 between Sheriffhall and Millerhill came to a standstill due to the incident which occurred around 1:30pm on Tuesday, December 20.

As of 4.45pm, Traffic Scotland announced that both lanes of the carriageway is now open in both directions following the collision.

Alerting motorists and urging them to avoid the area at the moment, Traffic Scotland tweeted: "UPDATE: 13:39 #A720 Sheriffhall CLOSED in both directions between Millerhill and Sheriffhall due to a police incident.

"Approx 20 minute delay Westbound. Approx 10 minute delay Eastbound."

Police have also issued a short statement via their social media channels, warning drivers to avoid the area due to the smash. They said: "The A720 from the Sheriffhall roundabout, Edinburgh City Bypass towards the A1 is closed in both directions due to a road traffic crash. Please avoid the area."

It is currently unclear how many cars are involved or if there have been any reported injuries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.10 pm on Tuesday, 20 December 2022, police received a report of a road crash on the A720 near to the Sheriffhall roundabout, Edinburgh City Bypass.

“Emergency services are at the scene and the A720 from the Sheriffhall roundabout, Edinburgh City Bypass towards the A1 is closed in both directions.”
