Edinburgh police issue warnings and tickets as 500 cars stopped in the south of the city

Police have been out in force across the south of the city this week in a bid to clampdown on speeding drivers.

Local officers stopped 500 cars in the Meadows, Morningside and Grange area on Wednesday (26 February) as they carried out speed checks.

Edinburgh Police South East took to social media last night to share news of their extremely busy day.

Despite the high number of vehicles that were pulled over, only one offence was reported, while a further 11 verbal warnings were issued to drivers.

In a statement on Twitter, the unit said: "What we have done so far this week for #RoadSafety and it is only Wednesday...about 500 cars checked for speeding at the Meadows, Morningside and Grange areas.

"11 verbal warning issued, one offence reported . Most drivers legally kept to the speed limit - thank you."

This isn't the first time that police have really clamped down on motorists in Edinburgh.

Police pulled over 37 vehicles during a day of road checks in north east of the city in December.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh Live reported that more than 50 taxis and private hire cabs were pulled over by police and council teams during a "multi-agency road check" in Leith in the same month.
