Edinburgh police go on clamping and towing spree after Leith locals complain about vehicles

Edinburgh police embarked on a vehicle clamping spree in Leith following complaints from local residents.

Community police in the area joined forces with a team from the DVLA for the day of action in the north of the city on Wednesday.

The aim was to target untaxed vehicles, and remove them from the streets. Police say that four vehicles were seized, four fixed penalty notices were issued and nine vehicles were clamped.

Edinburgh Police said: "Leith Community Cops, responding to local complaints, have been supporting @DVLAgovuk conducting a joint enforcement operation in the Leith area in relation to untaxed vehicles. This resulted in four vehicles being seized, nine clamped and four fixed penalty tickets issued."

It was revealed earlier this year that more than 24,000 enforcement actions had been taken against untaxed vehicles in Edinburgh in 2019. The DVLA use number plate recognition cameras to help quickly detect which cars have been taxed and which haven't.

Edinburgh Live has reported in recent weeks how roads policing teams in the capital have been cracking down on bad and dangerous driving.

Last Wednesday officers carried out checks in the Blackhall and Craigcrook areas, with 15 drivers caught speeding.

Earlier this month we told how more than 100 drivers were stopped on Burdiehouse Road and Braids Road as part of the winter road safety campaign. A host of warnings and fixed penalty notices were issued.
