Edinburgh police find two missing people on Portobello beach during weekend of chaos

Edinburgh police helped located two missing people during their weekend patrols at Portobello beach.

Officers were in the area in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour and disorder, and they made four arrests across the weekend. These were for offences including culpable and reckless conduct, and disorder. "Significant" amounts of alcohol were "seized and disposed of" by police as they attempted to stop any potential trouble at source.

Chief Inspector Murray Tait, local area commander for North East Edinburgh, also confirmed that patrolling officers were on-hand to help search for two people reported missing on the afternoon, and they found them swiftly.

He said: “Due to the increase in visitors heading to Portobello Beach at the weekend, officers stepped up patrols in efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour and disorder. Over the course of the weekend officers seized and disposed of significant quantities of alcohol and four arrests were made for offences including culpable and reckless conduct and disorder.

"Officers were also in position to swiftly search for two missing persons, who were both located shortly after being reporting missing.

“I am pleased to say the vast majority of those who came to the beach to enjoy the good weather and social atmosphere behaved responsibly. Whilst we do encourage everyone to enjoy themselves and stay safe, we will not tolerate any form of anti-social behaviour and increased patrols will remain in place.”

Edinburgh Live reported last week how police had made six arrests after significant amounts of disorder and bad behaviour on the beach and promenade two weekends ago.
