Edinburgh police disperse hundreds of youths amid Meadows chaos despite lockdown

Large crowds flocked to the Meadows in Edinburgh this evening amid some sunnier weather.

Police were called to the area and dispersed large groups of young people, with some reporting 'hundreds' present.

A force spokesperson said police are currently in attendance at the Meadows dealing with the incident after reports from locals.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We have received reports of a large number of youths gathering in the Meadows, Edinburgh, this evening. Officers are in attendance.

"The groups are being dispersed and suitable advice given."

Some locals expressed frustration that the gatherings took place again, despite Covid lockdown rules banning gatherings of more than four people from two households.

One local man said on Twitter: "Truly sick of having to live next to this. All last summer all over again. TBH, it's time to remove alcohol licenses from certain shops in the area around the Meadows.

"I'm particularly thinking of a place on Forrest Road & the Sainsburys Quartermile which are just booze shops."
