Edinburgh police dish out punishments while checking for 'criminal' road users

A host of drivers were pulled over and ticketed by police in Edinburgh as officers checked for "criminal" road users.

Officers spent Thursday out and about in the north of the city conducting a multiagency road check in partnership with the Home Office and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

They say the focus of their patrols was to clamp down on those who use the roads for "criminal purposes", while working to improve road safety.

Photos shared to social media show a number of officers conducting patrols, while pulling over vehicles and speaking to drivers.

During the checks they issued ten vehicle rectification tickets for faults as an alternative to prosecution. These tickets are issued for defects such as illegal number plates and worn tyres.

Police also removed one vehicle from the roads as it was in a dangerous state, and also dealt with the driver of an overweight vehicle in which a number of other offences were detected.

In addition they issued several fixed penalty tickets for road traffic offences.

Sharing news of the activity to social media, @EdinPolNE said: Officers from North East Edinburgh have been working with @polscotrpu, @DVSAgovuk, @ukhomeoffice as part of a multiagency road check today. Our focus has been on road safety and those who use the roads for criminal purposes.

"Results: 10 vehicle rectification tickets issued for faults as an alternative to prosecution. 1 vehicle immediately prohibited due to dangerous state. 1 overweight goods vehicle with a number of offences detected. Several fixed penalty tickets issued for motoring offences."
