Edinburgh police chase: Traffic lights totally demolished after crash on West Approach Road

A set of traffic lights were completely demolished after a car crashed into them following a police chase on Edinburgh's West Approach Road.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after failing to stop for officers in the city on Thursday morning. His female passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Shocking pictures taken at the scene show the extent of the damage done – with debris on the road and a set of traffic lights completely upended.

West Approach Road was closed for a short period while emergency services dealt with the incident, with bus services in the city affected.

Police say their enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers attempted to stop a vehicle in Edinburgh city centre at around 11.53am on Thursday, 30 April, 2020.

"The driver failed to stop and made off on various roads, eventually coming to a halt when the vehicle crashed in Western Approach Road.

As a result a woman passenger in the car was taken to hospital with minor injuries. A  25-year-old man has been arrested.

"Enquiries into the matter are currently underway."
