Edinburgh police called as gang of ’40 youths terrorise city park'

Police were called out to Montgomery Street Park on Saturday after reports of ’30 to 40’ youths causing chaos during a late-night gathering.

A resident told Edinburgh Live how young people have been gathering at the park for the past three weekends, where they have been engaging in antisocial behaviour.

According to the eyewitness, the group have been 'drinking, using drugs and leaving the kid 's play park useable and covered in glass.'

Police Scotland confirmed to Edinburgh Live that they were called out to the gang on Saturday evening (September 4) but the youths had dispersed by the time they arrived.

A frustrated resident sent images to Edinburgh Live of the park littered with alcohol and glass and even claims that he caught some youths ‘jumping on cars and scratching them’

He said: “A group of 30-40 youths aged around 15-16 have been gathering for the past three Friday and Saturdays in Montgomery Street park.

“The group are drinking underage, smoking cannabis, playing loud music and leaving glass and empty cans everywhere in the park.

“The park has now become unusable for kids to play in due to the shattered glass that's left everywhere.

“Furthermore, these kids have been jumping on cars, scratching them and playing football in the middle of the street, being a traffic hazard.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a group causing a disturbance at Montgomery Street Park in Edinburgh during the evening of Saturday, 4 September.

“Officers had attended and the group had moved on prior to police arrival.

“We are aware of the impact of anti-social behaviour in the community and plans will be put in place to address the issue."
