Edinburgh police break up huge 'party' in the Meadows

Police were called to the Meadows tonight to break up a large group of young people who were gathered in the George Square area of the park.

Earlier today Edinburgh Live reported how a large crowd of 'around 50' students gathered at the Meadows to watch a football game with no social distancing in sight.

It is now understood that the police were called later on in the evening after the gathering turned into a noisy 'party' in the Meadows.

One local shared a video in which the 'students' can be heard loudly socialising in a large group, writing: "Party time on the Meadows."

Another local commented: "Saw that. Loads gathered for a football match, no distancing whatsoever. Looks like they have stayed on."

Police Scotland said: "We received a number of reports about a group of people gathered in the George Square and Meadows area of Edinburgh shortly after 4.30pm on Saturday, 28 November.

"Officers have attended and have maintained a presence in the area.

"Our approach throughout the pandemic has been to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance, and encourage compliance, only using enforcement as a last resort."
