Edinburgh Playhouse to host famous Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical

A West End and Broadway classic is coming to the capital as Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - The Musical is set to hit the stage at the Edinburgh Playhouse in 2023.

The show will run from March 29 to April 15 2023 and casting for the musical is yet to be announced.

Based on the popular Roald Dahl children's book, the stage show follows young Charlie Bucket as he wins a golden ticket to the famous Wonka Chocolate Factory.

In the tale, the factory opens up its doors to five lucky golden ticket holders who enter a mysterious world of exotic sweets and inventions including a chocolate waterfall and never-ending gobstoppers.

As many will know this is a story that notoriously tackles the consequences of greed, all is not as it seems.

Known for its intricate visuals, the show is expected to be a colourful performance of music and choreographed dance numbers.

Songs from the original 1971 film will be included in the show as well as brand new musical scores by composer Marc Shaiman and lyricist Scott Wittman.

Scottish playwright David Greig has written the book for the musical that has been successful on Broadway and the West End. He is now taking the show back to Scotland for the first UK tour outside of the West End.

Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre Director, Colin Marr, said: "We're absolutely delighted to have this devilish and delicious musical with us for just over three weeks next Spring.

“Globally, this production has wowed audiences from Broadway to the West End, and we're excited to now host this world-class sensation at the Playhouse.

“From an Edinburgh theatre lens, we're especially proud to showcase this piece by award-winning playwright David Grieg, who has written the book. We can't think of a better stage to explore pure imagination, indeed."

The tickets go on sale Friday April 22, 2022 and can be found here: www.atgtickets.com/edinburghplayhouse
