Edinburgh Pentlands Instagram campervan couple now expecting 'miracle baby'

A couple who made the brave move to pack up their life and live inside a campervan have announced they will be welcoming a 'miracle baby'.

Jenna Winterburn-Hynd, 38, and her wife Cath, 34, had chosen to uproot their jobs in England last year, packing up their home and taking their van up to Scotland.

Starting off in Edinburgh, the pair had previously gone through multiple failed IVF attempts to have a second child, after their first child Luna, 3, was conceived through a sperm donor.

After beginning IVF in August 2020, Cath had tried six rounds of treatment that had all failed, with the 34-year-old working in stressful management role at the time.

In a bid to change their lifestyle for the better and take the pressure off, the couple moved into the van and headed up to Scotland. After a turbulent year which had seen Jenna's dad pass away from Covid, the family headed north and even gave up their house in England.

However, the risk was worth it, as within days of arriving in the Edinburgh Pentlands, they discovered Cath was pregnant.

Their second baby is due on June 2022.

Jenna told the Daily Record: "It was a really beautiful moment.

"We did the pregnancy test and both thought it would be negative, but I remember standing there and we saw a blue line we just couldn't believe it.

"It was the best feeling, it was great to know all the life changes we made had worked.

"We'd got rid of the stress and everything else we didn't really need and now we can have our second child."

Jenna, who owns her own ethical jewellery company Salt and Wild, said the family now live an 'amazing' life and she has even managed to adapt her work studio for life in a campervan - which has a composting toilet and eco shower.

She added: "When we made this decision it was really cathartic, then we went into panic mode.

"We gave up so many things you build up over your lifetime, so to give it all away was really scary.

"But the way we looked a it was it was a fresh start. Either we did all this and had an amazing experience with Luna and the IVF didn’t work, or we had an amazing experience and the IVF did work.

"As it turns out, it has been life-changing."

Jenna, Cath and Luna have since spent seven weeks exploring Scotland, making lots pitstops as they travelled from Edinburgh, on to St Andrews, Aberfeldy and the Cairngorms before heading to Loch Ness and heading down the west coast.

Jenna added: "I’ve always felt like I’m going home when I go to Scotland, because of my dad, so this time has been really special.

Jenna also insists our 'welcoming' country is ideal for a nomadic way of life and said it is possible that the family will settle here long term.

She said: "Scotland is the perfect country for this lifestyle. People are so welcoming and it’s the best country to explore with the most incredible views.

"We don’t know what we’re doing with the baby being born but we do think we’ll look for somewhere a bit more permanent and Scotland is high on the agenda."

Jenna, Cath and Luna share their life on their Instagram page Slowly Wilding and insist anyone can change the way they live.

Jenna said: "There’s society’s idea of what success is, but actually how do we measure success? Is it not being happy and calm?

"For some people, having a big house and job doesn’t make them happy and it's about realising what’s important to you and your family.

"Van life with a child is possible and it’s the best thing you can do for them. Luna is thriving from learning all these different things. For us as a family, we knew what we were doing was right."
