Edinburgh Pentland Hills campers flock to Harlaw Reservoir in droves

As the weather remains sunny and warm, images have been captured of the volume of wild campers that have descended on the Pentland Hills.

In images shared online, groups of campers gather flock to Harlaw Reservoir - where just two weeks ago an Edinburgh man tragically drowned after going missing whilst out swimming with friends.

Smoke from campfires can be seen across the waters of the reservoir with several tents gathered around the water.

According to reports online rubbish bags had already been dumped near the water by the 'wild campers'.

The Edinburgh Pentlands have continued to see visitors litter the local beauty spot in rubbish, as bottles, campsites and more are left behind.

On Friday images were shared with Edinburgh Live of an entire abandoned campsite near the reservoir with ditched tents and strewn rubbish.

Just one day later on Saturday 24 July, we reported on how Edinburgh fire crews were forced to rush to an incident in the same area after a fire broke out. The fire service warned that: "This was not a camping fire, it was either from a cigarette or ember from an other fire which hadn't been extinguished properly."

In a nearby site at White Hill earlier last week a huge array of bottles and cans had been dumped, as well as a full tent filled with human waste in another location.

Since the beginning of lockdown, the area has seen a huge influx of people visiting the beauty spot for picnics, walks and also overnight stays.

In the last year, regional park rangers have become increasingly frustrated at the lack of respect for the area, as police hope to curb the issue over the course of the summer.
