Edinburgh pensioner leaves touching note for class after being saved in Pentland Hills

An Edinburgh pensioner gave his heartfelt thanks to a group from a local primary this week after they 'rescued him' in the Pentland Hills.

In a touching note, the gentleman, Hamish, wrote to the headteacher of Gracemount Primary school after he had become stuck on a walk through the regional park.

After walking for some time, the 84-year-old had been halted at a padlocked gate on his route, leaving him with the option of walking a huge distance back or finding some way to climb the fence.

Jokily describing himself as an "ancient", Hamish was luckily found by a group of P7 children, who assisted both him and his two dogs safely over the wall.

Overwhelmed at the youngsters act of kindness, the pensioner went on to send a handwritten letter to the school's headteacher, Greg Dimeck.

Extremely proud of the actions of his pupils, Mr Dimeck had shared the letter on social media, with it reading:

"Dr Mr Dimeck,

"I wanted to express my thanks to the members of staff and pupils from Gracemount School who helped me own the Peatlands yesterday.

"I came to a padlocked gate at the end of a path and was trying to work out if I could climb over a fence when your school group arrived and immediately offered help.

"We got my two wee dogs across and then I was assisted over the fence, something as an ‘ancient’ I very much appreciated.

"The youngsters gave me a big wave as they set up the hill tracheostomy’s and I went down the path to Clubbiedean reservoir.

"Without them I was faced with a long trek back over the hills to my starting point.

"Please pass my gratitude to all concerned in the ‘rescue’ of an 84-year old shoe is learning he cannot leap fences on his own any more. I completed my walk safely with a lightened heart. Yours sincerely, Hamish."

Parents and local residents quickly responded to the heartwarming post, with one user commenting:

"Well done so proud of them all!"

Another replied: "Terrific! Well done to all involved!"
