Edinburgh passengers gutted after 'heartbreaking discovery' following dream cruise

A woman has been left devastated after £700 worth of items went missing from her luggage.

Elaine Linzi-Harper, 41, planned a huge birthday celebration with her wife Jane, to mark a milestone birthday. The couple from Alness in the Highlands went all out with a three-week cruise around the States and Caribbean Islands for Jane's 50th.

However, when the pair returned to Edinburgh before heading back home, Elaine suspected her case, containing birthday cash and presents, had been opened.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she said: "We had been on a cruise for three weeks celebrating Jane's 50th birthday. We went to New York and then we got a TransAtlantic cruise to Miami and got off in Barcelona.

"We got off the ship and went to the airport to check in for our flight back to Edinburgh. There was a little delay, but that was fine, that gave us more time to have some food and drinks.

"But when we got to Edinburgh and the case came off the carousel, I took one look and said to Jane, 'That's been opened.' I noticed a lanyard I had bought in Barbados was hanging out of the case, and I just knew there was no way I would have left it like that.

"When we got back to the hotel in Edinburgh, I looked in it. When I checked the birthday cards, all the money was gone. There was about £300 worth of cash in there.

"It was just rubbish. Everything, money from my wife's birthday cards, a Bluetooth speaker, and bottles of perfume. We're down about £700 worth. I'm just gutted, I was so angry."

Elaine continued: "It's not nice knowing someone's gone through your stuff. I know it didn't happen in Edinburgh because they got the luggage off the flight so quickly. I think it must have been in Barcelona.

"The thing we had a great holiday. It was perfect. And to end it on that, it was awful."

A spokesperson for Barcelona Airport encourages Elaine to report the missing items to the airline, Ryanair, and police.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "As per Ryanair’s T&Cs, which this passenger agreed to at the time of booking, ‘any lost, delayed, or damaged checked baggage must be reported to the Lost Property Desk at your arrival airport".
