Edinburgh passenger found dead in Lanzarote after failing to board flight home

A passenger who travelled to Lanzarote from Edinburgh has been sadly found dead on the Spanish island.

Robert Campbell flew from the capital to the Canary Islands for his first holiday abroad and was due to return on Thursday, May 11, but took unwell and had to go to hospital.

According to the Record, the 44-year-old, from Uddingston, had to be medically checked out and receive fit to fly approval. This meant he and his friend Paddy became separated at the airport.

Worried friends and family members issued heartfelt appeals for help to find Robert as well as a few flying out to Las Palmas to look for him. Despite extensive efforts, Robert's sister Margueritte Devine sadly confirmed her brother was found dead on Tuesday night.

A GoFundMe page has now been launched to help cover the costs of bringing Robert home and his funeral.

Margueritte said: "Sadly our brother died in Lanzarote yesterday and we're left with a bill of 6 and 10 thousand pounds in funeral fees. We are desperate to get him home asap so I am writing this to reach out from my heart to help us bring him home."

Tributes have also been paid to Robert on social media with his family thanking everyone who helped look for him. Sharing the fundraiser, one wrote: "Could everyone please share this and help us get our (uncle Rab ) Robert Campbell home asap where he belongs.

"And a massive thank you to each and everyone who took their time to share his post about him being missing and help us find him. One of our family members and friends flew over to Lanzarote to find him and bring him home but unfortunately they were sadly too late.

"We are all heartbroken and devastated and shocked as this wasn't the outcome we all were hoping for."

Another wrote: "Gutted to hear the passing off our Uncle Robert Campbell who was reported missing in Lanzarote has been found dead. First time going on holiday and not returning. "R.I.P till we meet again. Fly high."
