Edinburgh passenger aghast after entering city from abroad with NO Covid checks

An Edinburgh passenger was gobsmacked when NO Covid checks were done after he arrived in the city from overseas.

On Sunday night, Kevan Shaw's flight from Iceland landed at Edinburgh Airport and the passengers were made to wait in existing queues with people from various different flights.

He has questioned why so many passengers were allowed to walk through passport control together without showing any form of documentation relating to their Covid vaccination status.

Mr Shaw, aged 67, was concerned by the lack of awareness during the situation, given the recent news of the Omicron variant spreading through the country.

He said: "There was no attempt to check any paperwork, whether that was the passenger locator form or vaccine form. There was no check on anything apart from our passport.

"The problem is that we were funnelled into queues with people who we had no idea where they came from. People from goodness knows where would have to come through countries like Amsterdam to get to Edinburgh."

Kevan was visiting Keflavik in Iceland and detailed how more thorough checks were made there, compared to Edinburgh.

He added: "They had specific desks to check your forms, what they did was check my vaccine form and checked my test forms. If I had at that point inadequate test information, they were testing people right there and then.

"The whole thing just seems completely ridiculous and stupid. By Sunday night, we knew the new variant was an issue so you would have thought that traceability was in order. I just don't understand how the situation is so relaxed in Scotland and you can go to a place like Iceland where they're on top of it.

"These are not massively difficult things to do. When you see that level of attention paid you start to see my clear as to why our level of infection and deaths are so high."

A spokesman from Edinburgh Airport said UK Border Force were responsible for making Covid-related checks and the airport only provides them with the facilities to do so.

The UK Government have since issued a response on the matter.

A spokesperson said: "Our utmost priority is protecting the health of the public. Passenger Locator Forms have played an important role in enhancing our borders regime to help reduce the risk of new variants being transmitted.

"Passenger Locator Forms are checked by Border Force through automated systems so people’s journeys are not disrupted. Passengers may only be aware that a form has been checked if it has been filled out incorrectly and they are alerted as a result.

"Airlines are also required to check that passengers have completed the passenger locator form."
