Edinburgh parking rule changes coming in this weekend as new charges introduced

A host of changes to Edinburgh's parking rules will come into force this weekend.

Drivers are urged to be aware of the measures, which include the return of Sunday afternoon restrictions. The changes will be introduced as part of the Parking Action Plan on Sunday, April 11.

The City of Edinburgh Council say the rules are being altered to reflect the "seven-day-city" climate with shops, restaurants and attractions open all week under normal circumstances. The Parking Action Plan is aimed at tackling congestion, improving safety and keeping traffic moving across the city.

The authority say all parking places, loading places and single yellow lines in the city centre will be subject to parking controls every Sunday from 12.30pm to 6.30pm. All greenway (red line) stopping restrictions, parking places and loading places will also be affected.

Parking charges and permit controls will apply in places where controls were previously just in place Monday to Saturday.

The council insist they are making the changes for a number of reasons. It is hoped they should help buses and other transport move through the city quickly, effectively and safely, it's hoped it should improve access to the city centre for residents and visitors, and it should provide a safer environment for those walking or cycling.

What other parking rules will change?

During the pandemic residents who had a valid permit were able to park in pay-and-display spaces, however this will change. Residents will be notified by the council about this.

There will be changes to rules on shared parking in zones one to eight, with an additional 3000 spaces available to either residents with permits or visitors who pay-and-display. The hope is that this should correct the imbalance between the number of permits and spaces.

Further information on how you may be affected can be found on the City of Edinburgh Council website.
