Edinburgh parking charges come back into force from today as businesses begin to reopen

Charges for on-street pay and display parking have relaunched in Edinburgh from today.

The metres were suspended during lockdown to allow key workers to make essential workers as well as protecting the public from any coronavirus risk.

However, the council announced last week that the service would come back into force from Monday June 22 and reminded motorists that they must now pay for pay and display tickets.

As more sites around the capital begin to reopen, the council have stated that the charges will "support the city's economic recovery".

Council Leader Adam McVey said:

"This has been an extremely challenging period, and as we begin to emerge from it, we need to adapt the way we manage the city.

"We’re already seeing an increase in traffic on the roads so it’s essential that we respond to this. As businesses begin to reopen, and footfall to certain streets rises, parking enforcement is crucial, not only to encourage a turnover of visitors to shops, restaurants and other businesses, but also to create a safer, more welcoming environment for the many people travelling by foot, bike or wheelchair".

Today Edinburgh author Ian Rankin even took to social media to acknowledge that parking charges had returned, sharing an image of a car unfortunately boasting a parking ticket on their windscreen.

In a tweet he joked: "Parking tickets are returning to Edinburgh. Nature is healing."
