Edinburgh parents welcome baby Isabelle as capital's first newborn of 2021 just after midnight

Edinburgh welcomed its first newborn just after midnight, with baby Isabelle born at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at 12.54am.

Tipping the scales at 6lb 8 ½ oz, Isabelle Ailsa Paton was born to parents Jennifer (32) and Richard Paton (33) from Ratho.

Delighted new dad Richard said he "couldn't have asked" for a better start to 2021.

Proud mum Jennifer Paton gave birth at the Simpson’s Centre for Reproductive Health, where baby Isabelle was first footing.

At present, NHS Lothian said, St John's Hospital in Livingston was still to welcome a new born in 2021.

It comes amid muted Hogmanay celebrations across the country, with Scots urged to stay at home as the country battles surging cases of the virus.

Over 3 million tuned in to watch a drone show, with millions of people across the world flocking to the city - if only virtually.
