Edinburgh Open Streets returns with two new city centre routes involved for first time

Edinburgh Open Streets returns this weekend with two city centre routes involved for the first time.

Blair Street and Hunter Square will join the list of road closed off to traffic, with a Blair Street Spring Clean among the events taking place.

A packed programme of events and activities is lined-up for Sunday (2 February) across the Grassmarket Zone (Victoria Street and North Grassmarket), the West High Street Zone (Cockburn Street, Blair Street and Hunter Square), East High Street Zone and the Canongate Zone (including Cranston Street).

In the Grassmarket zone there will be E bike trails, Argentinian Tango dancing displays and urban sketchers – with opportunities to get involved.

The West High Street Zone will see some outdoor social dancing, music from a high energy carnival drum crew, the Blair Street spring clean and chances to try a Just Eat bike.

In the East High Street area people will be able to enjoy free self guided tours of the Literary Quarter, and there will be games such as giant chess, badminton and connect four on the Royal Mile.

The Canongate zone has plenty going on. There's the chance to see Dunbar's Close Garden from 8am before Just Eat E Bike trials take place at 12pm. There will also be a Burns and Banter event where people can make a tartan faery favour to take away and enjoy some Irn Bru, or a hot drink, with shortbread while enjoying some banter and Scottish music.

Knitting in the Crannie will also take place from 12pm to 4pm, and country, blues and soul duo Ravaged Hearts will perform from 2pm at the entrance to Sibbald Walk.

Events will be spread out between 8am until 5pm, although most take place in the afternoon. A full programme can be found on the Connecting Edinburgh website.

Open Streets events run on the first Sunday of each month, except August and September, with the Old Town turned into a "people friendly"  car-free area – allowing members of the public to celebrate and add to the culture of the city.
