Edinburgh on 'extreme' wildfire alert ahead of bank holiday sunshine

Edinburgh and the Lothians have been put on “extreme” risk of wildfires ahead of a mini-heatwave set to bathe the Capital in sunshine.

Soaring temperatures early next week are set to push the mercury up to around 20 degrees in some parts of the region after a soaking May as the country emerged from level three of the national coronavirus restrictions.

Monday’s bank holiday could see dozens rushing off to enjoy the balmy weather with barbecues and trips to rural locations.

But those heading out of the city have been warned to be vigilant amid fears over the spread of wildfires in remote areas.

Some areas of the Lothians will also be verging on “extreme” risk of blazes until at least Tuesday, June 1, according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).

Area Commander Bruce Farquharson, the SFRS Wildfire Lead, said: "We are asking the public to exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame.

"Many rural and remote communities are hugely impacted by wildfires, which can cause significant damage.

"Livestock, farmland, wildlife, protected woodland and sites of special scientific interest can all be devastated by these fires - as can the lives of people living and working in rural communities."

He added: "These fires can also have a hugely negative impact on the environment and the release of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere."
