This is the heartwarming moment Edinburgh NHS staff cheer and clap as a coronavirus patient leaves intensive care.

Medics captured the amazing moment the grandad, known only as Pete, was wheeled out of the unit.

He had been in the critical care unit at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for 10 days fighting the deadly virus.

Doctors and nurses surrounded Pete as he left the ward and gave a big thumbs up to the camera.

Now the 'miracle' heroes have been hailed for their incredible work to save him.

Edinburgh hospital tweeted: "10 days within ICU and we are delighted to be able to move our amazing patient to HDU."

The heartwarming video gathered almost 70K views and thousands of likes.

His wife Eileen replied: "This is my husband Pete I can't thank you all enough for your care and attention.

"You're all miracle workers and my heroes."

His granddaughter tweeted: "This is my papa, so unbelievably proud of him.

"So happy he’s getting better, cannot thank the NHS ENOUGH for what they’ve done for him"

Another person said: "Thank you so much for saving my brother.

"Your all fantastic each and every one of you.

"Stay safe guys."
