Edinburgh Newhaven harbour rescue operation as emergency services rush to save trapped teens

Emergency services race to Edinburgh's Newhaven harbour last night as part of a rescue operation to save two teenages trapped beneath a pier.

The alarm was raised after a 14-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy became trapped below the harbour as the tide began to come in.

It sparked a massive rescue operation involving police, ambulance and fire crews.

Police sealed off Pier Place near the harbour area while the huge operation to rescue the teens was underway at around 9.45pm last night.

On social media, shocked locals watched as the late night rescue unfolded as emergency services raced to save the pair.

Dramatic pictures shared online from the scene show police tape stretched across the road while several rescue appliances arrived on the scene.

Men attached by ropes are seen scaling down the harbour wall to rescue the trapped teens.

The two youths had been standing in the water but were unable to get back over the wall.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said that the pair had been returned to parents following the drama.

She said: "We received a report of two youths standing in the water and unable to get back over the wall at Newhaven harbour around 9.35pm on Friday, 23 October.

"Fire service and ambulance service attended alongside police officers. A 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were rescued and returned to their parents."
