Edinburgh Newhaven harbour rescue operation as emergency services race to scene

Emergency services were called to join a rescue operation two save two teenagers at a pier in Edinburgh.

The alarm was raised after a 14-year-old girl and 16-year-old girl became trapped below the Newhaven harbour in the capital as the tide came in.

It sparked a massive rescue operation involving police, ambulance and fire crews.

Cops sealed off Pier Place near the harbour area while the operation was underway.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show police tape stretched across the road while large rescue appliances were called to the scene.

Men attached by ropes are seen scaling down the harbour wall to rescue the trapped teens.

The two youths had been standing in the water but were unable to get back over the wall.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said that the pair had been returned to parents following the drama.

She said: "We received a report of two youths standing in the water and unable to get back over the wall at Newhaven harbour around 9.35pm on Friday, 23 October.

"Fire service and ambulance service attended alongside police officers. A 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were rescued and returned to their parents."

On social media, shocked locals watched as the late night rescue unfolded.
