Edinburgh New Town resident fumes as cyclists 'leave no space for pedestrians'

An Edinburgh New Town resident was left fuming after cyclists took over a public paths, giving pedestrians no space to walk.

The onlooker spotted the two cyclists speeding past their home, branding the pair "selfish" and "dangerous".

Writing on a neighbourhood community page, they said: "Sorry to be that person but the number of cyclists cycling on the pavement has gotten out of hand this last year.

"This pair were actually cycling two abreast and together with their dog, took up the whole pavement.

"Please don't do this, it's incredibly selfish and dangerous. Not everyone can leap out of your way at a moments notice."

Another user of the app wrote, "I'd be surprised if anybody thought that Abercromby Place was a shared use pavement.

"Some cyclists obviously think that they're above the law and are entitled to cycle on the pavement."

Another agreed, "When it's shared then pedestrians have right of way, not cyclists!"

A few more chimed in, with one user saying, "Thank you for pointing this out. I'm a wheelchair user, and the amount of times I've had to try and dodge some stupid cyclists at last minute, or stop completely, (my wheelchair takes a moment to come to a full stop) it is far too late!"

Back in April 2020, Transport Secretary Michael Matheson announced that Edinburgh will be part of the Scottish Government's system that would provide full funding for councils to introduce schemes involving "pop-up" cycle lanes and wider pavements.

Despite the cycle lanes becoming a permanent fixture in much of the city, complaints of them on the pavements are seeing an upwards trend.
