Edinburgh neighbourhood takes over as 'Scotland's Covid hotspot'

An Edinburgh neighbourhood has taken over as Scotland’s ‘coronavirus hotspot’ according to the latest Public Health Scotland data.

Silverknowes and Davidson's Mains seven-day Covid-19 positivity rate is now at 767 for every 100,000 people, which is currently the highest case rate in Scotland.

The area, which has a population of around 4,563 people, has registered 35 cases over the last seven days.

The area has a higher positivity rate than Scotland’s other 'hotspots' which include Tullibody North and Glenochil in Clackmannanshire -which has a seven-day positivity rate of 584.6 per every 100,000 people - and Ibrox East and Cessnock in Glasgow which has a seven-day positivity rate of 722.5 per every 100,000 people.

Overall the City of Edinburgh’s case rate remains relatively low compared to other harder-hit local authorities such as Clackmannanshire, Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, and Midlothian.

The capital has an overall case rate of 46.5 per every 100,000 people.

It is understood that there is likely a link between Silverknowes and Davidson's Mains becoming ‘Scotland’s Covid-19 hotspot’ and a large outbreak at a primary school.

More than half the classes at Davidson's Mains Primary School - which has a pupil roll of 534 - have been sent home due to fears surrounding the spread of the virus.

It's thought as many as 17 teachers and 11 of the school's 19 classes are now in self-isolation, forcing education bosses to adopt remote learning until at least the end of the month.
