Edinburgh neighbourhood becomes Covid hotspot after surge in cases

An Edinburgh neighbourhood has seen a sharp rise in coronavirus cases.

The Corstorphine South area is currently sitting with the highest number of cases over a seven day period, to the point where they now have a rate of 400 per 100,000 population.

Currently, the area is the only one in the City of Edinburgh with a rate so high, after they recorded 19 positive cases in the last seven days.

Although there have been higher numbers recorded over the course of the pandemic, this is still the highest figure in the capital over the week.

In the week leading up to February 24, a number of areas recorded more than 200 cases per 100,000 of population, such as Tollcross and the Inch.

These included:

Craigmillar

Broomhouse and Bankhead

Niddrie

Gracemount, Southouse and Burdiehouse

Murrayburn and Wester Hailes North

Mountcastle

Carrick Knowe

Tollcross

The Inch

Queensferry West

However, despite a rise in Corstorphine South, some areas of the city are recording next to no cases at all.

Areas such as Morningside, Fairmilehead and Corstorphine North recorded just 0-2 cases in the last seven days, with the majority of Edinburgh now reporting much smaller numbers.

It comes as 525 cases of Covid-19 were reported on Saturday (February 27) across Scotland, as well as 18 deaths.
