Edinburgh natives can't decide what we want to be called - here are our options

Have you ever noticed that there seems to be a collective noun for the denizens of every single city in the UK apart from Edinburgh?

Guys and girls from Glasgow are Glaswegians. Natives of Newcastle are Geordies. Then you've Dundonians, Londoners, Mancunians, Liverpudlians, Brummies, Aberdonians... the list goes on and on.

It appears that every man, woman, child, dog and budgie knows what to call themselves except for us here in the capital. Even Leith folk have Leithers, so why can't the rest of the city get its act together?

Potential demonyms have been suggested for Edinburgh people, of course, but, to date, not a single one has proved universally popular.

The Glasgow comedian Kevin Bridges once put it like this: "Someone fae Edinburgh is just a c**** fae Edinburgh." We'll probably swerve that one.

Let's take a look through our options.

Edinburghers

Out of all the possible demonyms for Edinburgh natives, this one appears to be in the lead, yet we still can't get everyone to agree on using it. For some though, the very utterance of the word "Edinburgher" is akin to screeching fingernails on a blackboard.

People from Pittsburg and Hamburg are, after all, Pittsburgers and Hamburgers, so why can't Edinburgh follow suit? It's that damn 'H'; makes everything awkward.

Edinburghonians

Taking a leaf out of Aberdeen and Dundee's book, we have Edinburghonian. On paper, we quite like this one, it reads quite well, but, let's face it; it sounds absolutely dreadful. In the bin.

Edinbourgeois

Okay, this one made us be sick in our mouths a little bit. We're not sure who first suggested Edinbourgeois, but can we all just agree that this one deserves to be chained to a lead anchor and tossed into the ocean?

Dunediner

A favourite among Edinburgh scholars, who will tell you that Edinburgh's original Gaelic name was Dùn Èideann, or Dunedin. Unfortunately, not enough people actually know this fact, so convincing an entire population that they should be called Dunediners has proved rather tricky.

Also, we're pretty sure the good folk of Dunedin, New Zealand might have something to say.

Edinburghensians

Similar to Edinbourgeois, though nowhere near as sickly, Edinburghensian basically needs rolled up into a carpet and thrown off a cliff. It might work if we were all cutting about in top hats and tails like the striding man in the Johnnie Walker branding, but we don't, therefore let's never mention it again.

Capitalists

While we are from the capital, this one failed to gain traction with members from the Edinburgh branch of the Scottish Socialist Party for whatever reason.
