Edinburgh named 'safest place to live' after new poll carried out among UK residents

Edinburgh has been named the UK's safest place to live in a new poll.

Residents were asked about their experiences of crime and how safe they generally felt living in towns and cities across the UK.

82 per cent of Edinburgh residents asked said they felt their home was a safe place to live.

Less than one in ten adults in the Scottish capital said that they have been a victim of crime, with just 16 per cent experiencing crime in any way.

Nearly 90 per cent of people living in Edinburgh generally felt safe.

The stats emerged in a study to mark the launch of new true crime docu-series Murdertown on Crime + Investigation.

Edinburgh's outcome was hugely positive in comparison to other towns and cities included in the UK-wide poll.

Glasgow came tenth in the list of safest places across the UK.

The study polling 2,000 Brits revealed that 31 per cent have felt unsafe in their own home at one point, with nearly a quarter hearing of break-ins or attacks in their local area.

Just under half of those polled have known a victim of crime, with a home break-in being the most commonly experienced offence.

The poll also revealed that more than one third of UK residents know someone who has be a victim of car theft. With nearly one quarter knowing of someone who has previously been mugged.

Shockingly, nearly one quarter of participants stated that they themselves have been a victim of crime in the area in which they live.

However, voters said there was plenty that could be done to make them feel a bit safer going about their hometown.

Half would like to see police patrolling the streets more often while one third would like to see more CCTV in operation to help them feel safer.

Three in 10 said more street lighting would help them feel safe when walking around at night.

Brits have felt so anxious, nearly a quarter have either moved or considered moving town or city in order to feel to an entirely different town or city in a bid to feel safer.

A third of participants said they feel less safe now in their current hometown than they did 10 years ago.

A spokesperson for Crime + Investigation said: “The results of this study offer a fascinating insight into how safe we Britons feel in our cities and towns.’’
