Edinburgh named most expensive place in Scotland for a pint with whopping price

A recent study has revealed the cheapest and most expensive places to buy a pint in the UK, and Edinburgh has come second for its pricey beers.

The capital came out on top in Scotland in terms of the most expensive pints, with an average price of £4.40, while Inverness was found to be the cheapest place in the UK for beer - with an average of £3.10.

Glasgow ranked as the third cheapest in the UK, with pints being priced around £3.60, while unsurprisingly London came out on top for the priciest pints - at an average of £4.50.

As reported by the Daily Record, the research was conducted by holiday search engine Holidu.co.uk as a way of investigating the best locations for staycations in the country.

Holidu calculated the 'Beer Price Index' by first finding out the highest rated pubs in 30 cities in the UK.

The researchers then recorded the price of a pint of the cheapest lager as well as the prices of a pint of popular lager (e.g. Heineken, Stella Artois) and a dark beer (e.g. Guinness).

The prices of similar types of beer were then gathered from a Wetherspoons pub in each city to allow for a comparison of both ends of the market.

It was by using this data that Holidu were able to determine the average price of a pint in each city and therefore quantify the cheapest and most expensive places in the UK for a beer.

Sarah Siddle, PR &SEO Manager for the UK market at Holidu.co.uk said: “Most strikingly we can see that in some cities you can buy 2 or even 3 pints of lager at a Wetherspoons pub for the price of a single pint at the top-rated pub.

"Although the brand of the cheapest lager on offer will not vary greatly across the UK, the price that someone has to pay for it will.

“As a result, we can see just how much more a tourist might expect to pay than someone who has a more intimate knowledge of a city.

What was also interesting was that although London was the most expensive destination for a pint of lager in a top-rated pub, it was also one of the cheapest places in the index for a pint of lager in a Wetherspoons.”

Johannes Siebers, CEO & Co-Founder of Holidu added: “We know that the price of a pint of beer is not the single most important factor when choosing a city to visit, but it is at least a good indication of the economics of each place.

"We hope that this is a light-hearted example for people to be able to see just how expensive, or inexpensive holiday destinations can be.”
