Edinburgh 'mystery good samaritan' reunited with cyclist she helped after crash

A mystery good samaritan has been reunited with the Edinburgh woman she helped care for following a horror bike crash in the city.

Edinburgh Live reported earlier this week how Slateford woman Caroline Hunter was looking to identify the quick-thinking first-aider who rushed to her rescue after an extremely painful accident. Caroline suffered a fractured wrist and leg injuries after crashing into a pothole and falling off her bike on Slateford Road on the evening of Friday, April 23.

However she says she was overwhelmed by the response of one woman who went above and beyond to help her in her hour of need. Caroline told Edinburgh Live the mystery woman stopped her car in the road to prevent oncoming traffic posing a threat, before providing first-aid care to her injuries.

The restaurant manager was keen to identify the good samaritan, and told how she wanted to thank her in person for her kind actions that day.

And now, after seeing the article on this website, the hero first-aider has identified herself – and she's also called Caroline.

Caroline Nicolson explained that in a weird twist-of-fate she's actually has mutual friends with the woman she cared for, although they didn't know it at the time.

She said: "It's totally bizarre. It turns out she's a friend of a friend.

"I received a phonecall from another friend who says they saw the article on Edinburgh Live, and asked 'is that you?'. I think they recognised me from the red car, and my big first-aid bag.

"It was good to see it because I had been wondering how she was. Often you wouldn't find out, so I'm glad she's on the mend.

"I could tell she was in shock at the time. She was pale white. So I was happy to help."

The good samaritan told how the pair have since been in touch.

She added: "We've exchanged a few text messages. It was really nice of her to get in touch. It was then we realised we had some of the same friends."

Caroline is a pupil support assistant at Woodlands School in Currie, where she is also a first-aider. She also helps out with events company Phoenix Health and Safety, providing first aid at events and gigs – so it's safe to say the cyclist was in good hands.

She said: "It was just common sense really. I stuck my hazards on and stopped the car so traffic had to go round us.

"I've always got a big first-aid bag in my boot so I was able to bandage her up and help get the shock under control. I would've taken her to hospital but she just wanted her husband to pick her up."

Caroline Hunter, the wounded cyclist, told earlier this week how she was left unable to move because of her injuries. She attended hospital later in the day and left with crutches and a splint for her wrist.

She works as a restaurant manager, and has been unable to return to work since the accident – however she admits things could have been a lot worse had it not been for the quick-thinking of her hero namesake.
