Edinburgh mums call for maternity leave extension amid coronavirus lockdown

Edinburgh mothers have voiced their support for a growing petition to have maternity leave extended due to the Coronavirus lockdown.

More than 50,000 people have added their names to the petition, calling for the UK Government to extend maternity leave for three months.

An Edinburgh mum, who supports the campaign, spoke to Edinburgh Live about her concerns.

The woman, who wishes to stay anonymous, says she has not even been able to register her newborn daughter because of the lockdown.

She said: "She hasn’t seen any family or even been for a decent walk as we are all country roads around here so no pavements and it’s not safe for a buggy."

"She’s going to need readjusted into the real world when this is over as all she knows is being at home.

"No one else has even held her and she’s hardly been outside or in the car and if this goes on for much longer she’s going to wonder what’s going on when we do take her into the world. "

Another Edinburgh mum, who also wishes to stay anonymous, told Edinburgh Live that she supports the petition.

She said: "It's time spent with family and friends and going to baby groups, parks, swimming, places to play, so not only are the parents missing out the babies are too.

"I also think this length of time in isolation without seeing other people will hinder babies development and it will take at least three months to start introducing the baby out to the world again.

"How traumatising will it be for the babies to spend months with you and only you and/or partner then just like that you're back to work the baby won't have a clue what's going on."

For petitions to be debated they must reach 100,000 signatures and with the maternity leave campaign gathering more support by the second - it is looking likely.
