Edinburgh mum dragged pal around by the hair in a drunken attack

An Edinburgh mum-of-two left carpet burns on the legs of her friend after lashing out at her in a drunken brawl.

Leanne Todd and her two children had been staying overnight at pal Nicola Patterson's flat in Pilton when they began arguing.

A drunken scrap resulted in Todd sitting on top of Nicola and pulling her hair, reports the Daily Record.

Nicola was left with carpet burns on both her legs after being pulled around by the hair during the fight.

Edinburgh Sherrif Court heard on Wednesday how Nicola Patterson had to barricade herself inside her flat using two chairs to protect herself from Todds.

The 33-year-old student pled guilty to assaulting Nicola, causing carpet burns to both knees and a chipped tooth.

Fiscal depute Karima Stewart told how Nicola had become 'aggressive' on July 15 last year at around 12.30am after the friends had been drinking.

She said the mum-of-two had pushed Nicola to the chest “with both hands then grabbed her by the hair with both hands, pulling her to the ground”.

She added that Leanne Todd had sat on top of her friend while grabbing her hair. The court heard how the victim fled to the stair landing to try and get away where she was 'grabbed again by the hair.'

Nicola was hauled to the ground with her face held there. Ms Stewart said Nicola managed to grab Todd’s hair “in an attempt to get her off”.

After breaking free again, Nicola had to put chairs against her doors to keep Todd away.

When cops arrived at the scene they found Todd “visibly intoxicated”, Ms Stewart said, and she told officers: “I never attacked Nicola.”

Defence agent Mark Hutchison said that both Todd and Nicola had been “drinking very heavily”.

He added that it was a “fight more than anything else”, and Todd had also suffered carpet burns on her elbows.

The solicitor said Todd also had a wrist injury and a “false fingernail was stuck in her head”.

He told the court how the mum was studying community work at college in the hopes of becoming a support worker and that she'd sought support over her drinking.

Sheriff Adrian Cottam said it appeared to be a “fight that got well and truly out of hand”.

He added: “It’s beyond me how things could have escalated so badly between you and a friend.”

The sheriff ordered Todd, of the city’s Northfield area, to carry out 65 hours of unpaid work.
