Edinburgh and Lothians MPs blast 'shambolic' 45 minute queue to vote after virtual parliament binned

The new socially-distanced system in the House of Commons is a 'shambles' according to Livingston MP Hannah Bardell.

Some MPs were left queueing for 45 minutes or longer, with scores of politicians seen circling around a courtyard on the parliament's estate as they waited in line.

Edinburgh South MP Ian Murray likened it to a visit to the Alton Towers theme park when approached by Edinburgh Live.

The Conservative' s have scrapped remote working arrangements which had let MPs vote and participate remotely throughout the coronavirus crisis.

The Commons can often have many votes in one day on issues like Brexit, meaning some MPs could spends hours waiting in line.

The UK Government's leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg argued: “The stopgap of a hybrid Parliament was a necessary compromise during the peak of the virus, but by not being here the House has not worked effectively on behalf of constituents.”

He added he expects “teething problems” with the new voting system which involves queuing, adding it will be “some time before our proceedings are fully restored”.

Labour’s Chris Bryant joked “have you ever been to Alton Towers” to whichRees-Mogg replied: “Indeed, yes I have."

Edinburgh East MP Tommy Sheppard told Edinburgh Live he thought the new system was a "farce".

In a tweet, Sheppard pointed to the digital voting system in place in the Scottish Parliament which allows MSPs to vote from their desk.

Ian Murray, Labour MP for Edinburgh South, told Edinburgh Live it was an unedifying sight: "The virtual parliament and remote voting was working well and was keeping every MP and staff members safe.

“To scrap that for no reason is another example where the UK Government is mismanaging this crisis.

“On Tuesday, we were snaking around the inside and the outside the building for over 30 minutes to vote like a ride at Alton Towers. It was an unedifying sight and a huge waste of time. We were queuing around the foliage in the garden at one point.

“Some MPs will be disenfranchised because of this."

Livingston SNP MP Hannah Bardell was not a fan either, she told Edinburgh Live: ‘The current state of affairs in the House of Commons is a complete shambles that poses a health risk to staff on the estate, MP’s and their communities.

"For the Conservatives to vote down and dismantle the very sensible measures that allow hybrid and digital proceedings is an act of democratic vandalism.

"Two tiers of MP has now been created and those, like me, who have family at home in the vulnerable category or who are themselves shielding are effectively locked out of the UK Parliament.

"This is not about ‘returning to work’ as we have worked remotely throughout this crisis with a significantly increased workload- my casework is up 300%- this is about the UK Conservative Government doing everything to avoid scrutiny and to hang on to ancient tradition at any and all cost."
