Edinburgh more friendly than Glasgow in list of UK's friendliest cities

With city breaks and staycations in the UK booming, it can be important to know where you are going is filled with friendly faces and a big welcome.

With that in mind, the UK's friendliest cities have been named in a new study by Parkdean Resorts, and unsurprisingly it's a Scottish city that takes the top spot.

The research on the top 50 UK towns and cities with the greatest sense of community, taking into account factors that denote an open and friendly community that anyone would want to be a part of, saw Edinburgh overtake Glasgow to be named the most welcoming city in the UK.

Parkdean Resorts analysed the following criteria to assess which UK city ranked the friendliest and had the strongest sense of community based on happiness, safety, number of local businesses, number of community activities and number of Facebook groups to determine which place has the strongest sense of community.

A spokesperson for Parkdean said: "Coming in as the top UK city overall for its friendliness and sense of community is Edinburgh in Scotland with a community index score of 360.

"The Scottish capital is steeped in history and culture, but budding residents may not know that they have the strongest sense of community than any other city in the UK.

"Edinburgh scored higher than any other city for community activities at 1,151 meaning new movers will have plenty of opportunities to meet the locals. The city also scored highly for safety with just 124 incidents in the past 12 months and high for local businesses with 998 in the area."

Beating out Exeter and Oxford in second and third place, the other Scottish entry in the top 10, Glasgow, which usually tops these types of lists, only ranked in fourth.

No other Scottish cities made it into the top 20.

Most intriguingly both Edinburgh and Glasgow rated highest for community safety with the capital, according to the research, only reported 124 crimes last year, with Glasgow only just behind with 143 crimes.
