Edinburgh Mimi's Bakehouse fume 'you must be joking' in bin row with council

One of Edinburgh's most popular bakeries has hit out at the city council on Twitter, after a long-running row over the removal of a bin outside their premises.

Edinburgh Council previously removed a longstanding bin from the bus stop in front of Mimi’s Bakehouse in Leith, and the family owned business has been asking for a replacement since June.

On Monday, Edinburgh Council Help issued an update to the bakery, writing: "The bin will not be replaced because of former complaints made by the bakery.

Mimi’s Bakehouse immediately disputed the claim, fuming: "Sorry, is this a joke?! We never once complained about the bin, it’s badly needed! The whole front of our shop is constantly covered in litter! Can you send me proof of this complaint?”

In early June, Mimi’s Bakehouse made the first request to replace the bin by the bus stop in front of their shop in Leith. Since then, the Bakehouse has renewed their request and asked for an update at least four times on Twitter.

In July, Mimi’s posted a photo of rubbish on the bakery’s doorstep.

“Cleared this morning and within an hour. It’s daily and constant! We need the bus stop bin back.”

The bakery previously said people have been leaving cigarette butts on the ground outside of the shop.

“As much as we'd love to think people will cross the road/walk up the street [for a bin] it doesn't seem to be the case,” Mimi’s Tweeted.

In August, Edinburgh Council Help said council officers claimed the bin was removed after previous complaints from the bakery. On Monday morning, the claim was reiterated and the bakehouse was told the bin would not be replaced.

“The team have no intentions of installing a new bin as they claim previous complaints were made by yourselves that led to its removal,” Council Help Tweeted.

Mimi’s Bakehouse disputed the claims and asked to see records and details of the complaints. Edinburgh Council Help once again Tweeted an update: the report was reopened and the comments were added to the file.

Councillor Adam McVey also Tweeted his support for Mimi’s Bakehouse on Monday. McVey claimed he would follow up with the council’s head of service and director.

“This is a busy bus stop & I agree this needs to be well maintained,” McVey said.

Mimi’s Bakehouse had hoped for a positive update on Monday in time for her Dad’s birthday.

“It’s my Dad’s birthday tomorrow and an update would genuinely be the best gift,” Mimi’s said.

Edinburgh Council told Edinburgh Live that they expected a bin would be returned to the site, despite what was said on social media.

Mimi’s Bakehouse have been approached for further comment.
