Edinburgh memories museum to close at Ocean Terminal leaving visitors gutted

A beloved memory museum in Edinburgh is set to close for good, as an announcement from the unit owners was posted on social media.

The Spirit of Leithers, located within the Ocean Terminal shopping centre, is sadly shutting up shop for good next month, after 18 months in the complex.

The 'wee museum of memory', adored by patrons, has announced on social media that they will be closing down on April 3, but will remain online to keep the spirit of the museum going.

Writing on Facebook, the unit owners wrote: "Sadly time's up for 'Spirit of Leithers' Unit at Ocean Terminal.

"Sadly folks after a successful year and a half we'll be closing our unit at Ocean Terminal on 3 April. We want to thank all the people who have visited and shared stories and chat.

"It's been a real privilege to have a base where folks can visit in person. The Living Memory Association (The Wee Museum of Memory) are using the space to set up another project

"On 3 April we will have our final event which is the launch of our Old Leith Rediscovered on line app so if you want a final look at the work on the walls get along on 3 April or before. We'll still be here on line!"

In this announcement, the Spirit of Leithers stated that they will be launching an app, called Old Leith Discovered, on April 3 - the same day as the store closes for good.

People were sad to see the small museum go, as one Facebook user wrote: "Will be sorry to see this go. I was brought up in Leith and visit regularly."

Another said: "Thanks so much for this operation will try and pay a visit before the closure. It looks amazing."

And a third wrote: "Thank you. Loved that wee exhibition." More comments read: "That's so sad. It will be missed by many."

Others said: "I had plans to visit this May when I come home from Canada so disappointed to learn that it is closing."

Meanwhile, another added: "That’s terrible each time I am on holiday from Australia, I go and visit this amazing place. I come from Leith so sad thank to all the volunteers."

And finally, one concluded: "Sad it has come to an end."

The Spirit of Leithers museum is located within the Ocean Terminal shopping centre in Edinburgh, and will stay open until April 3, 2023.
