Edinburgh Marathon 2022: Road closures and parking options for the summer event

The Edinburgh Marathon is returning next weekend - with runners making their way from Holyrood Park Road to Musselburgh.

Runners will tackle the 26.2mile trail and other routes including the half marathon and kids marathon, with all events taking place on Sunday May 29.

Many roads are disrupted along the route and finding a place to park your car around Edinburgh could be difficult over this weekend.

Parking and road closures in Edinburgh

Parking is also no longer free on Sundays in the capital so drivers will have to prepare to pay for parking over the event.

As the marathons will be starting outside the Royal Commonwealth Pool this year the pool has opted to close their top car park in the morning of the event.

This change will affect those who need disabled and parent/child access. However, the main car park will be accessible via Dalkeith Road entrance to Pollock Halls.

While Holyrood Park car park has not been announced to be closing there is limited access on this road after 6:30am and traffic delays have been predicted.

Drivers have been warned that there will be no parking available at all in Musselburgh and restrictions will be in place.

Park and Ride

People are being advised to take public transport instead or walk to the finish line for celebrations and to avoid taking a car to Musselburgh over this weekend.

Park and Ride event buses are being deployed to solve the parking issue. The routes will start from Newcraighall, Straiton, Sheriffhall and Wallyford Park and Ride stations for drivers to park their cars and get the bus into the City Centre and Musselburgh.

When does the marathon start?

The Edinburgh Marathon festival starts on May 29 2022 at 10am.

Entrants for the 26.2 mile race have to be 18 years old or over.

The Edinburgh half marathon starts earlier at 8am on the same day and runners can be as young as 17 years.

The 10k, 5k and junior and kids kilometre runs start on Saturday May 28.
