A thoughtful Edinburgh man is set to walk a marathon in his garden for the NHS after being inspired by the heroic exploits of Captain Tom.
The UK has for the last week been gripped by the amazing efforts of 99-year-old Captain Tom Moore who raised more than £23million for the NHS Charities Together by walking 100 laps of his garden in the lead up to his 100th birthday.
His story has been an inspiration to people across the country, including Edinburgh man Norman Young who now wants to do his own bit for the good cause.
Norman lives at a sheltered housing development in the city and, after seeing Captain Tom doing his thing on the news, pledged to complete his own personal marathon challenge – and he wants to do it in the next five days.
Despite requiring a walker he's aiming to complete 270.5 laps of his garden – the equivalent of 26.2-miles – before next week is out. That means he's going to need to complete 54 laps a day, and 55 on his final day.
A JustGiving page has been set up with the aim of raising an initial £1000 target, and on the page Norman is quoted as saying: "Having been inspired by Captain Tom I have decided I am going to try to walk a marathon in aid of the NHS.
"The NHS are doing an amazing job and we all owe them a great deal of gratitude. I hope I can add to the amazing work they are doing with any donations I can.
"Any donation you could give to help me add to the £1000 target would be really appreciated, every penny counts."
