Edinburgh man stunned as brazen heron snatches frog from his pond

An Edinburgh resident has captured incredible footage of a heron after it ventured into his garden and snatched a frog from his pond.

The 20-second video captures the brazen bird, which appears to be a grey heron, on his roof in the residential Bruntsfield area just moments after it swooped in.

Shared by David Hunter (Twitter: @dvrh9), he said: "One less frog in our wee Bruntsfield pond after this visitor this morning..."

The bird took his time enjoying his main course, while soaking up the Edinburgh sunshine on a neighbour's roof after making the kill.

David told Edinburgh Live: "My wife Clare spotted the heron fishing at our little pond in the garden at about 10am on Sunday.

"After darting at the water it took off all of a sudden but just flew to the neighbour's roof with a frog. It took fully 20 minutes to swallow the frog and then it flew away over Viewforth, perhaps to the Union Canal."

One upside of lockdown has been some pretty incredible wildlife spotting in Edinburgh.

This included a beautiful kingfisher in the Water of Leith, which was captured resting on a branch in the river just off of Anderson Place.

Elsewhere, a bold deer has been spotted in an Edinburgh suburb leaping over a fence and darting across a busy road.

The incredible clip was captured by 17-year-old Daniel Hoyle at 5.30am as he made his way to work. Daniel, who works at Scotmid in Stockbridge, said the road was completely quiet when he spotted the animal.
