Edinburgh man 'impaled on spike' after horror fall as emergency services rush to scene

An Edinburgh man has been rushed to hospital after he was 'impaled on a spike' following a horror fall in the city centre.

The terrifying ordeal took place on Atholl Crescent shortly before 9am on Wednesday, May 24, as emergency services rushed to the scene. Police, fire and the ambulance workers were all present as concerned eye witnesses watched on.

It is understood the man collapsed before colliding with the spike on top of a row of railings, with police assisting the ambulance service at the scene.

The person's condition is currently unknown. A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed officers were called to Atholl Place just before 9am to assist the ambulance service after reports of a man falling onto railings.

An eye witness who passed the scene shortly afterwards reported seeing two ambulances parked at the side of the street adjacent to Manor Place. A police car and fire engine were also present.

Worrying images show emergency service vehicle at the side of the road, with the eye witness adding how one person came out of the back of an ambulance before it left the scene with its sirens on.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 08:48 to attend an incident on Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh. An ambulance and a Critical Care Practitioner were dispatched to the scene and one patient was transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.”
