Edinburgh man dressed as Jesus stops traffic in Leith by dragging cross over road

This is the surreal moment a man dressed as Jesus Christ stopped traffic to - quite literally - cross the road in Leith.

To the astonishment of onlookers and motorists, the second coming appeared to arrive on Great Junction Street as the robe-clad man halted vehicles near Newkirkgate before dragging a large wooden cross to the other side of the pavement.

Behind him, as the chief put Sunshine on Leith on a scorching Saturday afternoon, disciples hold up placards bearing the message ‘Jesus Loves You’ before turning them over to reveal a secondary proclamation stating ‘He Died For You’.

On the road, a penitent photographer kneels to capture an image of the stunt before the crowd quickly disperses.

However locals were left rubbing their eyes in disbelief at the spectacle - even if it missed a few historic details.

A video posted on Facebook prompted a slew of discussion over the bizarre incident.

As one user pointed out: “I’m not sure that representation of Jesus is factually accurate, starting with the trainers.”

Another added: “Next time they can stand with their placards at Sandport and he can walk across the water.”

A third paid testament to the area’s relationship with the almighty, writing: “Many moons ago, the religious education teacher at Leithy said Jesus was from Leith.”

The mystery son of god has not yet been identified and as yet no one has come forward to claim responsibility for the stunt.

Whether he was the messiah, or just a very naughty boy remains to be seen.
