Edinburgh man complains after he and his wife were almost hit by drill falling from Forth Bridge

An Edinburgh man has complained to BEAR Scotland after he and his wife were almost hit by a drill that had fallen from the Forth Road Bridge.

Taking to Twitter, Mike McGrail wrote: "Crazy moment today. Walking under the Forth Road Bridge, and a hand drill fell from it and landed 5 yards in-front of my wife and I. Not a chance that would have ended well if it had hit us. How can that happen @ForthBridges?"

After being replaced by the Queensferry Crossing and closing for repairs and refurbishment, the Forth Road Bridge reopened in February 2018 as a dedicated Public Transport Corridor for buses, taxis, pedestrians and cyclists only.

Scottish travel writer Robin McKelvie commented on the initial tweet, writing: "That’s shocking Mike. Glad no one hurt. Walk with my wee girls under at least four times a day. Might be worth alerting the police, might make bridge team take it as seriously as they should and not just brush it under the carpet."

Another person said that there should have been netting in place to prevent anything falling from the bridge, saying: "A good pal of mine used to work on the bridge until they changed to BEAR earlier this year (Amey used to look after it). Report to the Control Room- should be on the BEAR website - and also report to HSE - he's completely disgusted - there should be netting in place."

Mr McGrail went on to tweet: "Following up on this @BEAR_Scotland have launched an investigation and were on-site early this morning checking all safety measures. Communication has been excellent."
