Edinburgh man carries 40kg weights up Ben Nevis for UK's highest workout

An Edinburgh man trekked up Ben Nevis with a 40kg barbell in order to do the UK's highest workout.

Rory McAusland took on the epic challenge in order to raise awareness of mental health issues and soldier suicides.

The Daily Record reports he even wore a weighted vest to make the climb even harder.

He's also raising money for mental health charities which support people in need.

Rory will be running, cycling, walking and rowing a mile for every person lost to suicide in Scotland in 2018.

The 27-year-old said: "Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45. Suicide in young men increased for the fourth consecutive year last year in Scotland and on average, 12 men took their lives a day last year around the UK.

"1 in 9 young people in Scotland have attempted suicide and 1 in 6 have self harmed.

"I don't know anyone who hasn't been affected in some way by mental health and I have had my own struggles."

The Ben Nevis workout was dedicated to Staff Sergeant Olaf Schmid, an Army bomb disposal expert who died in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2009.

Rory has raised £4500 of his £40,000 target for Combat Stress and Samaritans so far.
