Edinburgh man astounded after plucking First World War bayonet from city canal

Edinburgh magnet fishers have found a rare First World War bayonet in a local canal.

Seasoned magnet fisher Calum Black pulled out the weapon from the Union Canal near Chesser.

The local was surprised to find the large weapon and is now considering donating it to a museum.

The memorabilia was found yesterday whilst Calum was out magnet fishing with friends.

Speaking exclusively to Edinburgh Live Calum said:

“I found it just next to Chesser in Edinburgh and at first I thought it was a sword and then I noticed what it was and me and my friend were so happy with the find.

“I’ve not found anything like that one before.

“I’m not sure what to do with it, I think I will try and contact the war museum and see if they are interested in the item.”

Calum shared his incredible find on social media captioned: “Can’t believe I have just pulled out a WW1 bayonet .

“But unfortunately won’t be able to keep it.”

Social media users were impressed with the historic find.

One user said: “I gotta say it’s an excellent find too.”

Another exclaimed: “Well pleased for you dude, on my bucket list this dude.”

While one added: “Outstanding , well done.”

The term bayonet, or bayonette, itself dates back to the second half of the 16th century, and they were widely used weapons in during the First World War.

Earlier this month the magnet fishers pulled a large safe from the same canal.
