Edinburgh locals win fight against huge housing development as plans rejected

A new housing development in Edinburgh has been refused by the council after a number of complaints and objections from locals.

The plans submitted for 229 Willowbrae Road in Duddingston is to be denied by planning officials, after proposing 48 apartments should be built.

Initially filed earlier this year, the corner site had been a pub and commercial premises for some time, before being bought over and knocked down to make way for a residential development.

Details and designs for the homes stated that the 48 apartments would be contained inside two separate four-storey buildings, and would also include a commercial unit.

However, after over 50 objections were submitted from neighbours on the planning portal, documents to be discussed by the council on Wednesday (May 26) has stated the ideas will be refused.

The rejection has been based on a. number of reasons, with a council document stating:

"The proposal is contrary to policy as it does not draw on the positive characteristics of the area.

"It represents overdevelopment of the site and fails to comply with the Edinburgh Design Guidance, particularly in terms of its height, impact on local views and its relationship with the wider surroundings."

"The height and form of the proposal would not integrate well with its surroundings, is inappropriate in its context and would adversely impact on local views."

The refusal also details that the development would not have met the 'green space' requirements needed for it to go ahead.
