Edinburgh locals warned not to light flames amid 'extreme wildfire risk' at Pentland Hills

Locals are being warned not to light any campfires at the Pentland Hills following a bout of dry weather.

Park rangers have warned on Facebook that the popular beauty spot now has a high risk of wildfires due to extremely dry ground conditions.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have had to attend to a number of abandoned fires at the Pentland Hills that could have posed a serious risk this past week.

It comes as Edinburgh is set to experience even more dry weather with the capital to be hit with a 'mini-heatwave' on Friday.

Pentland Hills Regional Park warned of the 'extreme fire risk' online, saying: "We're experiencing extremely dry ground conditions in the Pentlands, especially in areas like woodlands.

"PHRP officers and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have had to attend a number of campfires that were abandoned still burning in the past week.

"Please always follow the advice to guard against wildfires and protect sensitive habitats, especially during prolonged spells of dry weather. #RespectProtectEnjoy."

They also advised locals to ensure they place BBQs on a hard surface and extinguish and dispose of them afterward, as well as properly disposing of cigarettes.
