Edinburgh locals want controversial 'Spaces for People' extended to Pentland Hills

A local community council have called for some of Edinburgh's 'Spaces for People' measures to be implemented in the Pentland Hills.

The initiative, started by Edinburgh Council, has seen a host of new cycle lanes, widened pavements, speed reductions and closed roads in order to allow more space for pedestrians and cyclists during the pandemic.

However, the council have recently launched a consultation to keep the scheme, which has proved controversial with some local residents.

The roads affected have mainly involved areas in the city centre, as well as main thoroughfares out to the suburbs of Edinburgh.

Now, a local council have called for 'Spaces for People' measures to be extended to the roads around the Pentland Hills after increased usage during lockdown.

The Balerno Community Council stated this week that investment in the area was needed to "achieve safety", after long queues of cars have been pictured over the last year.

They said: "Overall SfP projects are decided centrally and the ‘improvements’ so far have mainly been in the now virtually deserted city centre.

"The increased popularity of the Pentlands is in large part a consequence of lockdown. SfP was devised to address road safety for pedestrians and cyclists during lockdown.

"Neither pedestrians nor cyclists, whose safety is important, can safely access the Pentlands without using rural roads."

Since the pandemic, the Pentland Hills regional park has seen a huge increase in usage, with many local residents now making use of the area.

However, this has caused some controversy, after long queues of parked cars have blocked farm vehicles and "clogged" the streets.
