A720 Edinburgh city bypass delays after horror three-vehicle crash

Edinburgh police have warned locals to avoid using the city bypass following a serious road collision involving three vehicles. It is understood that a lorry, van and car are all involved.

Officers closed down access to the A720 from Sheriffhall to Gilmerton after the horror smash around 10:56am this morning, with cops warning of huge queues.

Police confirmed to Edinburgh Live that emergency services, including the ambulance service, and a fire crew are on the scene, but it is not yet known if there are any injuries.

Traffic Scotland put out a warning about the accident on Twitter penning: "#A720 RTC RTC W/B Sheriffhall - Gilmerton Traffic is queuing back to Sheriffhall TRISS en route Updates as we get them #DriveSafe @SETrunkRoads @edintravel."

Police Scotland expect the road to be closed for 'some time' while they deal with the accident and urged locals to avoid the City Bypass if they can.

They said in a tweet: "We have officers in attendance at this collision btwn #Gilmerton & #Straiton junctions westbound. Road closed and no access to #A720 from Sheriffhall or Gilmerton. Please avoid."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland told Edinburgh Live: "We were called at 10.56 am today to an accident involving three vehicles, the ambulance and fire service were also called."
