Edinburgh locals to stage protest against violence towards the LGBTQIA+ community

Edinburgh locals have organised a pride protest to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and stand up against violence.

The peaceful protest is to take place on Little King Street on August 13 at 6pm, with organisers asking that all attendees continue to acknowledge the presence of COVID-19.

Facebook group PRIDE PROTEST EDINBURGH states that the gathering is an opportunity for people to come together and show resilience against homophobia.

The news comes as three men in Edinburgh were arrested and charged following an alleged homophobic attack on the city’s Leith Street last week.

An organiser behind the pride protest said: "This is our opportunity to come together and put in the work to create a stronger, safer future for Scotland and the community of Edinburgh.

"Standing in solidarity is a recognition of the fact that our marginalised community can channel our collective power and be stronger than ever. People have a right to protest safely.

"We ask that all attendees continue to acknowledge the presence of COVID-19, if you have symptoms, please stay home.

"As Scotland moves to Level 0 on 9th August 2021, the legal requirement for physical distancing and limits on gatherings has been removed.

"Please wear a mask, bring hand sanitiser and remain at a distance from other protesters if you feel safer doing so."
